What is leap day? Is 2024 a leap year? Everything you need to know about Feb. 29

Leap Day, also known as February 29th, occurs only once every four years in a leap year. It is added to the calendar to keep it synchronized with the solar year, which is slightly longer than 365 days. Without the addition of leap years, our calendar would slowly drift out of alignment with the Earth's orbit around the sun.

In a leap year, February gains an extra day, making it 29 days long instead of the usual 28. This additional day helps ensure that the calendar year stays close to the actual length of a tropical year, which is approximately 365.24219 days. 2024 is indeed a leap year, so it will have a February 29th. This means that instead of ending on February 28th, the year 2024 will have 366 days, with February 29th being the extra day added to maintain alignment with the solar cycle.
